Background

Brief History

The Glass Artists' Gallery established since 1982 originally in Paddington, relocated to Glebe in 1986, is Australia's foremost contemporary glass gallery.

The gallery aims to expose the public to glass as an art form by providing a showcase for innovative, contemporary Australian and New Zealand glass.

The gallery has comprehensive collection of artists and artworks for anyone wishing to purchase or commission contemporary glass artworks. This resource provides information to Interior Designers and architects interested in using glass in architecture or urban planning, to enable consultation with glass workers who are committed to extending the many applications in glass as an art form.

As well as maintaining a wide range of work in regular stock, the Glass Artists' Gallery program of changing exhibitions exemplifies the diverse and unique uses of glass in contemporary arts practise. This is recognised by the constant demand for Australian glass artists' work for major public and private collections here in Australia and overseas.

The gallery represents over eighty (Australian and NZ) artists working in glass and keeps collectors informed of latest developments within the Australian glass movement.

The Glass Artists' Gallery was the first Australian gallery to represent artists at Chicago ‘New Art Forms' and then SOFA (Sculpture, Objects & Functional Art), Chicago and more recently New York.

The Gallery was the flag-bearer of contemporary Australian glass, when in 1991, it initially exhibited under the banner of ‘Craft Australia", and since then has been representing Australian artists each year in the United States and in Singapore.

In 2004 and 2005 the Gallery was also selected to exhibit at "Collect" (Contemporary Art exposition) held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Major Commission Work

The gallery works with architects and interior designers to create optimum results, which incorporate applications in contemporary glass. For example:

The Westin Hotel (Old GPO) 1 Martin Place, Sydney. The contemporary studio glass featured in this building was installed by the Glass Artists' Gallery. This venue has received excellent responses to the work.

New Parliament House, Canberra. 'Willy Willy', 1998 by Maureen Cahill, suspended glass installation The permanent architectural installation is in a three-storeys high area in the Advisor's waiting space in the House of Representatives. It comprises 1metre suspended units of slumped, laminated glass designed as suspended an installation for permanent display in a public space.
